About Fourth Estate's JournSpark

JournSpark™ is a program from the Fourth Estate that provides local news startups and qualifying journalism organizations with no-cost hosting services, technical support, and other business assistance.

We believe that the news business is about more than just profits, and that we have a responsibility to give back to society. One way we do that is to foster, support, and incubate early stage news and journalism entities around the world.

JournSpark™ provides journalism organizations and news startups with industry-leading server, storage, compute, and software resources for maximum performance, redundancy, and resiliency including WordPress, Joomla and Drupal and the fastest scripting languages like PHP 7.

Who is eligible to participate in JournSpark?

 

Any qualified digital news organization, press club, or student news publication can seek participation in JournSpark. Examples of participants include, but are not limited to: journalism startup organizations, college or university journalism programs, and student media outlets.

A qualified organization should meet one of the following criteria:

  • It is engaged in original news-gathering.
  • Act in the public interest, broadly defined.
  • It is a small commercial entity, not-for-profit organization or affiliated with an accredited educational institution.
  • have annual revenue of less than $150K annually.

You qualify for JournSpark if you:

  • are a small commercial or a not-for-profit organization
  • generate less than $150K annual revenue

* For-profit journalism startups may participate for up to 3 years.

* Non-profit organizations may participate for as long as they meet program eligibility.

JournSpark Program FAQ

What countries are eligible for the JournSpark Startup Program?
The JournSpark Program is open to any qualifying journalism startup, press club or school affiliated news outlet or website anywhere in the world.

How will I know if I’ve been accepted?
You will be notified within 7-10 business days if you have been accepted into the program at which point you will be asked to confirm enrollment and create your account. Only accepted applicants will be notified, although we may contact you if we need additional information.

How long can I stay enrolled in the program?
If you are a for-profit entity you may participate for one year. If you are a non-profit entity you pay participate for as long as you meet program eligibility. Extensions, discounts, and custom options can be negotiated based on your participation and demonstrated need.

* For-profit participation is limited to one year. Non-profit participation is re-evaluated annually.

Do I need to be a member of the Fourth Estate to be accepted?
While we certainly hope that you will find membership  to be valuable and beneficial it is not a requirement to participate in the JournSpark program.

Is there any fee or costs to participate?
There’s a one time $1/setup fee. (this is charged to allow us to validate your identity and prevent fraud). The only other fees would be for products and services such as SSL certificates and/or domain name registration.

How long does it take to review my application?
Please allow up to 7-10 business days for us to review your application. Only startups that have been accepted into the program will be notified.

What hosting benefits come with the program?
The JournSpark includes generous 150 GB storage, unlimited data transfer and professional online support.

What type of support will I receive?
You will be provided unlimited support as it relates to the web hosting environment, email and standard hosting services.  You will be responsible for your own web design, software development and content.
